Sinkwich in black

A reader named David Hawk e-mailed me this picture from the cover of the 1942 annual issue of Football Illustrated with Georgia great Frank Sinkwich on the cover. There was a lot of discussion in the pressbox of whether Georgia had actually worn black jerseys before. I don't believe a consensus was ever reached, so most of what you saw written was that Saturday was the first time in MODERN Georgia football history that the Bulldogs wore black jerseys. I thought that was the safest way to do it.

But this picture shows that someone from Georgia wore black before in some capacity, even if it was simply to pose for the cover of a magazine. Which I don't guess settles much of anything.

EDIT: I added a second photo that another reader, Carter McInnis of Lawrenceville, sent me of Sinkwich. Again in the black jersey.

um, we wore them in the 1943 Rose bowl. Sinkwich is also wearing black in his Heisman pic.

Get with it. The a$$ beating this weekend must still be couding your mind.

Ching,
I liked your comment last week about how Cowherd was coming here and someone defending him by saying how much of a fan he is of UGA.
The ESPN Power 16 rankings just came out. Cowherd has USC 5, UF 7, and UGA 11, the second lowest anyone has them... just thought I'd point that out.

Look at Sinkwich's face. Doesn't he look like..... Stafford?

you know a general rule I think I've noticed? When people start a message with the word, "Um," they're usually about to say something irritating and needlessly condescending. That's Internet courage for you.

The Heisman painting keeps getting brought up, but it shows Frankie wearing a red helmet too--which would also be news since all accounts had the Dawgs wearing silver helmets until the Dooley era. Given that it's a painting and not a picture, I am leery of giving it conclusive effect

Anonymous jerk at 5:15 is right that the Sinkwich pic in the black and white is from the Rose Bowl, it's on one of their websites.

The Heisman pic is actually the same picture as the front of the football annual. My guess is they painted it years after and the Dawgs already had helmets, and they found one of the only pictures of Sinkwich and painted the helmet red.

Joe T Sr. actually played in that Rose Bowl. A few years ago they auctioned off his black jersey at the senior gala. Looks like we've got 2 pretty big wins in black, so far.

Looking at the pictures and the description of the Football Illustrated from ebay. It looks like it was a preview-type magazine for the 1942 season (I'm thinking like a Lindy's), which makes me think the Dawgs used the Black jerseys before the 1942 season. Perhaps they were first used for the Dawgs first bowl appearance in the Orange Bowl after the 1941 season. Anybody got any pics of that? Just some thoughts.

GO DAWGS!

And don't forget . . . Flush twice! It's a LONG way to Auburn!
