Dooley update

Per UGA sports communications...

Former University of Georgia Director of Athletics and head football coach Vince Dooley underwent outpatient surgery to remove a tumor from his vocal chords on Tuesday, May 22. Lab reports this week indicated the tumor was malignant, and he will begin radiation treatments some time in June. Dooley's prognosis for a full recovery is excellent according to his tending physician.

It's over

CSU won 9-4, so they're in Friday's national championship game. They'll play the winner of the Tampa-Southern Indiana game that's about to start, at 8 p.m. (Eastern, 7 central) on Friday.

If you're interested, there will be a fan bus leaving CSU at 5:30 on Friday. $10 buys you a ticket to the game and transportation. Call the school 706-568-2204 to reserve a space. They need at least 25 people to put the trip together.

Adding on

CSU scored twice in the top of the eighth. Howard's sac fly drove in Geiger and then Drew Candlin hit a double off the top of the fence in right-center to drive in McKee from first. When I say the top of the fence, I mean it landed on the top of the fence, went backwards and bounced off a metal rail above the fence before bouncing back into the field.
It's 7-4 CSU going into the bottom of the eighth and reliever Blake Norrell's pitching to the bottom of the CSLA order.

insurance run

Howard hammered a liner to left for a sac fly. It gave Geiger plenty of time to tag and score, putting CSU up 6-4. Cal State LA's changing pitchers. McKee's still on first and Drew Candlin's up. He's 1-4 today. After that, Brad Linton's 2-3 with three runs and two RBIs and Rodney Rutherford's 3-for-4. They might make some noise here.

Redemption

Brown and McKee just redeemed themselves for the earlier miscues. They just turned an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play to get out of the bottom of the seventh and protect a 5-4 lead.
Jonnie Geiger led off the top of the eighth with a double and McKee just reached on an error. Cougars have runners on the corners with nobody out and No. 2 batter Billy Howard up.

We've got a ballgame

Looked like Columbus State was on its way to an easy win. They were up 4-0 going into the bottom of the fifth before Cal State-LA scored four runs on four hits, a walk and a hit batsman. It's 4-4 with one out in the top of the sixth and LA has all the momentum on its side.

LA scored two runs after CSU 2B David Brown booted a tailor-made double-play ball, only getting a force at second for the second out. Then they missed another chance for the third out when SS Kurt McKee booted a grounder. Ironically, Brown and McKee are both recently minted gold glovers.

On the flip side, LA just made a pair of great plays to retire the top third of the CSU order 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth. We'll see what happens now...

Wasted chances

CSU probably should have blown this thing open by now. They're still up 2-0 in the middle of the third, but they just left the bases loaded to end the third and had two on with one out last inning, but hit into an inning-ending double play. Kilgore's looked pretty good so far, though, except that he's walked three.

Cougars up 2-0, middle of first

CSU cleanup man Brad Linton hit a two-run bomb in the top of the first, almost out of the park and onto the railroad tracks behind the right-field wall. It's his 10th homer of the year. Cal State LA just came up to bat in the bottom of the first.
CSU's up 2-0. Bryan Kilgore's on the mound.

First two games on the deuce

Robinson is Dogs' 10th commit

The recruiting sites are reporting that Greater Atlanta Christian linebacker Christian Robinson has committed to Georgia. The 6-foot-2, 204-pound sam linebacker is the Bulldogs' 10th commitment. His father, Ken, played at South Carolina and he had numerous offers, including from the likes of LSU, South Carolina, Clemson Georgia Tech and Alabama.

Your list, as of now:
WR A.J. Green, Summerville, S.C.
DT DeAngelo Tyson, Statesboro, Ga.
S Bacarri Rambo, Donalsonville, Ga.
CB Brandon Boykin, Fayetteville, Ga.
RB/LB Richard Samuel, Cartersville, Ga.
LB Christian Robinson, Norcross, Ga.
WR Tavarres King, Mt. Airy, Ga.
PK Blair Walsh, Ft. Lauderdale, Ga.
TE Dwayne Allen, Fayetteville, N.C.
DE Cornelius Washington, Waynesboro, Ga.

So I didn't liveblog

Sorry I didn't get to the liveblogging thing, although I doubt anybody was too upset by missing out on that. Maybe I'll give it a shot tomorrow.

Columbus State advanced to tomorrow's 3:30 p.m. D2 semifinals with a 5-4 win over Angelo State last night. It was a great game. CSU lefty Korey Noles, who helped lead LaGrange to a Class AAA state title a few years ago, got roughed up in the first couple innings, but got out having allowed only a run in each. He wound up throwing 141 pitches and going into the ninth -- 8-1/3 to be exact. Quite a gutty effort.

They basically won the game with a four-run third inning -- doing all the damage with two outs. The big blow was a three-run inside-the-park homer by their DH, Rodney Rutherford. I would have sworn Angelo State's center fielder Drew Caraway made the catch on the play (and I've since watched a replay on TV) before he crashed into the wall and the ball went flying. The umpires ruled he never demonstrated possession, so instead of the third out and a 2-2 tie, CSU had a 5-2 lead that it barely held onto.

Things are setting up pretty well for CSU. They're off today and await the winner of tonight's 7:30 elimination game between Cal State-Los Angeles and Nebraska-Omaha (Cal State LA's up 2-0 right now in the bottom of the third). Whoever that opponent winds up being, they'll have to beat the Cougars tomorrow and again on Thursday to advance to Friday's championship round. That's going to be tough as CSU has right-hander Anthony Arrington (8-1, 1.87 ERA), another LaGrange guy who could have easily earned some all-America consideration, ready to go and third-team all-American Jarrett Coker (11-3, 2.81) waiting to go again on Friday. Coker pitched a complete-game six-hitter in Saturday's series opener. Looked great. And they're in great shape in the bullpen, as their relievers have thrown two-thirds of an inning in two series games. Going back to regionals, CSU relievers have thrown 5-2/3 innings of relief in the Cougars' last seven games. Otherwise, they've had five complete games and Noles went 8-1/3 last night.

On the other side of the bracket, top-ranked defending D2 champ Tampa will face Southern Indiana -- which beat Angelo State 12-10 in an elimination game today -- for a spot in the finals. Like I said yesterday, the games have been pretty exciting and the ballpark in Montgomery is outstanding. If you're looking for something to do, it's been pretty fun to watch so far.

You can find out more about the series here.

Montgomery-bound

You know, I don't guess this page has to be solely about Georgia football. This time of year, I could (and obviously have) gone days and weeks at a time without updating with anything related to the Bulldogs. Mostly that's because there's not much going on in the summer. Also, my job in anytime other than the fall is to keep up with sports at Columbus State, which is really a lot of fun. I always say Division II sports are a lot more in line with the true spirit of college athletics, rather than the big-money big business Division I has generally become.

And Columbus State is a pretty fun program to cover. Last week, I traveled to Akron, Ohio and covered their softball team in its first-ever D2 world series (they came in third) and this week, the baseball team is playing in the D2 world series in Montgomery. If you're looking for something to do with your Memorial Day evening, head down there and watch them play at 7:30 Eastern. Riverwalk Park, where the Class AA Montgomery Biscuits play, is a beautiful place to watch a ballgame. And I might be off base here, but I think CSU's got a chance to make some noise before this tournament's over.

So anyway, my buddy Jay G. Tate, who covers Auburn for the Montgomery Advertiser, uses his work blog to post about whatever strikes his fancy. Last summer he was posting daily updates on the World Cup, which were actually pretty entertaining considering his subject matter was a bunch of ponytail-wearing commies flopping around on the pitch. So with that in mind, I guess I might post about whatever moves me for the rest of the summer, just to give the folks who are nice enough to visit this page on occasion something new to read. I can't promise it'll be good, but it'll be something.

Perhaps starting with some liveblogging tonight from CSU's game in Montgomery.

Dawg Days Columbus photos

A local photographer, John Pyle, sent me some shots from the Dawg Days stop in Columbus, so I told him I'd post them here.

The guy he's doing the interview with in that last photo is D.J. Jones, who played for Georgia in the early 1980s and played a couple of years in the NFL. He and Dale Williams, another former Georgia player, host a sports TV talk show in Columbus.

Dawg Days in Columbus

Got a chance to talk with coach Richt for a few minutes yesterday at his summer caravan tour stop in Columbus and we chatted about some general stuff. I wrote a story from the conversation that I'll admit doesn't really break any new ground. This was my premise: because of the way things looked in the spring, perhaps the offense is going to have to be the horse that pulls the cart -- at least early on -- partially because of the losses of Paul Oliver and Akeem Hebron and partially because the offense is where a lot of the experienced depth lies.

I asked him if that's the way he sees it and he responded that he hates to think of it that way, because a championship-caliber team in the SEC almost HAS to have a dominant defense. You certainly can't find much wrong with that statement if you think back at the better teams in the league in the last decade. But that raises several questions for this Georgia team: is this defense capable of being dominant right away? They've got plenty of guys on it who were well-regarded coming into the program, but not a lot who've started many games. And say the offense is going to have to lead the way, Georgia fans, are you comfortable with that? Despite coach Richt's rep as an offensive guy, Georgia -- like most good SEC programs -- has historically won with defense.

I'm not saying I think the defense will be bad this year, because I really don't know what to expect from it. My guess is that there are too many talented players on that side for it to be any worse than average -- and I'll bet it'll be better than that. But when you send that many new guys out there, and you'll be opening against a pretty dynamic offense in Oklahoma State, and there's a strong possibility you're going to give up some points. We'll see in September. I'm very intrigued by this opening matchup because both teams seem to have the potential to be explosive offensively.

By the way, ESPN's Todd McShay has Oklahoma State's Dantrell Savage (who played for Jordan High here in Columbus and was our Bi-City Player of the Year my first year here) as the No. 4 running back prospect in next year's draft. He has their Adalius Bowman as his No. 3 receiver. Incidentally, he also had Paul Oliver as his No. 6 overall prospect and No. 1 cornerback for next year's draft. That Oliver-Bowman matchup would have gotten a heck of a lot of attention leading up to that game...

McIntyre inducted in Georgia Sports HOF

Former Georgia and Thomasville High Bulldog Guy McIntyre was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame over the weekend in Macon. There are a bunch of links to induction stuff for a class that also includes Steve Bartkowski and Jessie Tuggle among others on our sister paper in Macon's Web site. Here are a couple of relevant links concerning McIntyre here (the induction ceremony story) and here (his HOF bio).

King to Georgia

Georgia picked up another big WR commitment today -- and another exciting in-state player named King -- when Tavarres King chose the Bulldogs over Clemson (the school where his father played), among other schools. The Mt. Airy, Ga. receiver posted a 1,000-yard season last year at Habersham Central.

As is previous Georgia commit A.J. Green, King is a member of Rivals.com's Preseason Rivals 100. This looks like a highly talented receiver class, which is big since the Bulldogs lose a bunch of senior WRs after this year. Rivals also lists King as the No. 4 in-state recruit this year. The Bulldogs already have commits from three of those four -- King, DeAngelo Tyson and Richard Samuel.

Oliver ineligible

The school sent out this announcement this afternoon. Obviously this is an enormous blow to the UGA defense this year.

University of Georgia senior cornerback Paul Oliver has failed to meet NCAA academic eligibility requirements for competition this fall and plans to petition the NFL for entry into the supplemental draft this summer.
Oliver’s situation does not preclude him from remaining enrolled in school. He was a regular starter last season and has started 15 games in his career.

“We’ll miss him for sure,” UGA head coach Mark Richt. “Of course, he could have made a decision to leave for the draft immediately after his junior season. He was aware there could be risks but he decided to continue in school and get closer to his degree. His best opportunity now to continue his playing career is through the supplemental draft coming up in July.”

Dent injury

For those of you who read the paysites, I'm sure you already saw this. But the school sent out a release about it, so I figured I'd post it here.

Redshirt freshman linebacker Akeem Dent broke a bone in his left foot this week and is expected to be out 6-8 weeks. He's supposed to be back for preseason practice, but obviously he's going to miss some summer conditioning.

Here's the release:
University of Georgia redshirt freshman linebacker Akeem Dent of Atlanta suffered a broken metatarcel bone in his left foot during a workout earlier this week.
Dent will undergo surgery on Friday and a full recovery is expected by the fall according to UGA Director of Sports Medicine Ron Courson.

Student ticket issue

So it looks like Georgia is changing its student ticket policy to make it more difficult for upperclassmen who aren't full-time students to get football tickets, thus making it easier for freshmen to get those tickets. Carter and Chip from the AJC wrote about it today.

That's probably the correct move to make, but if you ask me, it's shameful that large numbers of freshmen some seasons are denied the opportunity to purchase student tickets to every single home game. With this move, you're still punishing Georgia students, it's just a different group that you're punishing.

I realize regular-priced season tickets are an enormous moneymaker, and maybe I'm thinking in unrealistic terms, but I think priority one when it comes to ticketing should be the students. The kids are the ones who deserve the gameday experience most of all and to make current Georgia students go out and buy tickets from a scalper just seems wrong to me.

Then again, they damage their argument when the student section is half-full midway through the first quarter at a mediocre game. That would embarrass me if I were a Georgia fan, but my feeling is they deserve the privilege to do that if they please. Although it definitely doesn't do anything to help Georgia's reputation for having a blase home atmosphere.

Hebron to GMC

So Akeem Hebron plans to transfer to Georgia Military College and the cozy relationship between Georgia and GMC will apparently continue. Aside from this recruiting season, when three GMC players -- DE Jarius Wynn, DT Corvey Irvin and OT Vince Vance -- signed with the Bulldogs, Milledgeville is where Georgia has stashed several players with disciplinary problems in the past.

Odell Thurman immediately comes to mind. After his redshirt year in 2001, Thurman was suspended for a year and went to GMC before being allowed back in 2003. Josh Johnson went to GMC in 2005 after a disciplinary suspension, but never returned to Athens. The former No. 9 linebacker in the country out of Stephenson High signed with Marshall and recorded 72 tackles last year.

Now it's apparently going to be Hebron, who was ranked the nation's No. 8 linebacker last year before redshirting at UGA in 2006. If he keeps his nose clean over the next year, he can be back in 2008.

It's interesting to see the school rules actually enforced on a football player to the fullest extent of the law. The school strengthened its alcohol policy last September, changing the punishment for an alcohol offense while on probation from where it "may" result in suspension to making a suspension the minimum punishment. Call me crazy, but I kind of thought they might find a way around it and Hebron would get a multiple-game suspension instead.

So what do you think Georgia fans? Is this punishment excessive? Are you glad to see the rules enforced equally on a football player? Does the practice of stashing kids who've gotten in trouble at GMC trouble you or is that the best way to keep them close to home and still teach them a lesson?

Richt statement on Hebron

"Akeem made some mistakes and he's paying the price. Depending on how he handles things and what happens between now and then, we would consider him returning to the team. But those are decisions for a later time."

Underage drinking policy

I was just reading over the university rules concerning underage drinking on the school Web site, a policy that was revised in September 2006, which I'll assume is why Ian Smith received a different punishment than did Akeem Hebron.

Here's the relevant section, in case you want to read it:

Minimum Sanctions for Alcohol and other Drug Violations
All students found in violation, through the University's judicial process, of alcohol and other drug related misconduct (see UGA Code of Conduct) will receive:

First offense — Alcohol awareness class and probation for the remainder of current semester and for the next two semesters (Fall and Spring semesters only) enrolled at the University. Probation extends through summer terms and/or any institutional breaks.

Second offense while on probation — suspension from institution for current semester and one subsequent semester (Fall or Spring semesters only). Summer suspension may not be substituted for a Fall or Spring semester and will be included if suspension is initiated during Spring semester.

These are minimum sanctions. The findings of fact, any particular circumstances, and prior record of the student will be factors considered when determining any appropriate sanctions.

Students who are suspended from the University for any length of time should be aware that this action may impact the following:

  • tuition, residence hall costs and fees (suspension does not forgive financial obligations)
  • student financial aid, including HOPE Scholarship
  • athletic participation and eligibility
  • health insurance (contact your personal health care provider)
  • University housing
  • meal plan
  • use of University resources and access to University facilities
  • immigration status for international students
  • veterans and dependents of veterans
  • internships, assistantships, and study abroad
This is not an exhaustive list.

Hebron suspended

That crafty Carter Strickland has the story obtained through open records laws that Akeem Hebron has been suspended for the season and will be eligible to return to school in January 2008.

The redshirt freshman linebacker from Gaithersburg, Md., 18, was arrested twice this spring for underage possession of alcohol. Once for an incident outside the Butts-Mehre athletics building and once last month outside an Athens bar, where he was accused of threatening a bouncer after being refused admission and then was arrested for public intoxication by a police officer who was called to the scene.

What does Georgia need?

There was a comment on the depth chart post talking about being concerned that the starting flanker is 5-10, 150 pounds, which is a perfectly reasonable concern. I think Mikey Henderson's size is at least in part why you haven't seen a little more of him at wideout than you have, although injuries and his value as a punt returner also surely played a part.

I started to respond to why I think it's OK to see him line up as a starter -- he's a potential home run hitter and Georgia sorely needs that. Also, there's SURELY going to be a pretty heavy rotation at the three receiver spots, so the starting position is largely ceremonial -- and that got me thinking about what this year's Georgia team needs most of all. This is just a discussion topic. No insight at all, other than what I've seen with my own eyes.

* I think what Georgia needs more than anything else is people who can make something happen with the ball in their hands and Mikey and Sean Bailey definitely fall into that category. Holding onto it is what they need to worry about.

Did you know that Georgia's longest passing plays from scrimmage last year covered 53, 46 and 41 yards. After that, there were a few plays in the 30s and then it's all 20s. And the running game was even less dangerous. Danny Ware broke a 41-yard run against Western Kentucky and then after that, the team's long for the year was a Stafford 39-yard run against Auburn. Kregg Lumpkin's long was 26 and Thomas Brown's was 24. That's why Knowshon Moreno can have an instant impact. He's a playmaker who'll make a nice 1-2-3 punch with Lumpkin and Brown, who are different types of backs.

There are lots of other things that I'm sure Georgia fans would like to see improve, or are generally concerned about coming into the season. You've been over all of them here in detail (offensive line play, new defensive ends, receivers holding onto the ball, not being photographed holding kegs over your head when you're 19 and the starting quarterback). But I think adding some folks to the offense who strike some fear in a defense might be what Georgia needs most of all this year. And it looks like they might have that.

So what do y'all think? Am I overstating that need or is there something else that's more pressing?
