T. Brown to Falcons!

That's exciting. Thomas Brown just went in the sixth round (172nd) to the Atlanta Falcons. That will make a great story. Hometown guy. Great character. I hope he can stick with them.

It's good PR for the Falcons, too. I've never understood why they didn't bring in more guys of local interest, particularly UGA guys. It looks like it might be tough for D.J. Shockley to stick, at least the way things currently stand in their QB depth chart -- Ryan, Redman, Harrington and Shockley are all on the roster. I wouldn't be surprised to see one of those veterans cut, though. We'll see.

i can see harrington cut....but the falcons had to go w/ a qb in the first two rounds.

what's going to happen to tony taylor? falcons drafted 3lbs thus far (2 outside, 1 inside). i know that he has history w/ the dc, but that's not particularly great for tony...hopefully he'll be able to beat out people for a couple more years at least. i think you get nfl pension after the first 3 eyars in the league.

I'm starting to think that the Falcons view one hometown guy a year a easy way to buy support. Georgia fans were really encouraged when they took Shockley in 2006, but he was behind Schaub and Vick, so the Falcons were really just buying some love for a cheap (7th) price. Are they doing the same thing here? I'm totally happy for TBrown, but I feel like they're just drafting him because they want to get that hometown line going again. They've got Norwood, Snelling and Turner at the RB position, and I can't see Brown beating out either Norwood (speed back) or Turner for a spot. Maybe, maybe Snelling, but he looked rather good in limited playing time last season.

I'm getting tired of them not actually drafting guys from UGA who they could use. Signing Elam over taking Coutu in a late round? How hard would that have been? Cheaper, likely would have worked out about as well, and they'd have gotten the same exposure among Georgia fans for taking a local guy.

No offense to Brandon Coutu, but Elam is one of the 3 or 4 best kickers of all time.

I understand that, but my point is how much did he cost, and how much will the Falcons get out of it? They could have spent way less money on Coutu, garnered a little of the local empathy they're so obviously looking for, and gotten a guy with WAY more years left in his leg than Elam has. Now, look for the Falcons to get 3-4 years out of Elam and then start looking again.

In the Falcons' defense, D.J. would have had a chance to play last season had he been physically able. My concern, for his sake, is that last year was his best (and possibly only) genuine chance to play for that team. In Thomas' case, he is an extremely capable special teams player who has value in that area alone. I'd think they would want at least 3-4 tailbacks on the roster, so he can compete there as well, although clearly Turner and Norwood are the first options.
