in the mail yesterday. Has it has been released on news stands yet or is this an early copy? Anybody? He sends free copies out to Football Writers Association members, so I'm not sure...
Anyway, I think it's my favorite of the preseason national mags simply because of the sheer volume of information and analysis. Very entertaining stuff. He also goes out on a limb a bit more than conventional wisdom often dictates, which is always interesting -- particularly since he's often correct.
So with that said, you Georgia folks will be disappointed to know that he has Florida at No. 1 in his preseason top 40 and Georgia at No. 9. He points out that UGA is a strong possibility to be the polls' preseason No. 1, but he adds that he rates Georgia's schedule as the third-toughest in the country.
Teams on Georgia's schedule that he ranks in the top 40:
1. Florida
12. Auburn
13. LSU
18. South Carolina
23. Tennessee
26. Alabama
29. Arizona State
We all know these preseason things don't particularly matter, but it's fun reading. So check out the Steele mag if you're looking to buy one of these things. It's not the flashiest in presentation, but it's obvious the guy puts a ton of research into this stuff.

I picked up my Phil Steele mag at B&N a couple of weeks ago. Yes, interesting reading. Um, dense. Good analysis, generally. And I like the "interesting tidbits" he throws out for each game of each team's season.
Dont mockingly phone in a piece just because you're out the door to that trailer trash cow tippin ag school in slapout alabama. "You Georgia people..."? You were one of the best when you put forth an effort, but this is just a slap in the face. Just tell the folks at the LE to go ahead and pull the trigger as opposed to this crap. Guess we Georgia people dont get any College World Series info since the war chickens arent in it... huh?
Anonymous 6:41 PM feels like a jilted girlfriend.
Besides if you read it's not a done deal there you're off to the Auburn. Right?
I like Phil Steele, but he seemed quite sloppy this year.
He lists Arizona State asGeorgia’s first non-conference road game, except for Tech since 1995. Well there was the season opener against Clemson in '03
I think he also has Van Gorder as the Defensive Coordinator at South Carolina.
When one lists millions of pieces of information, one is bound to be wrong here and there.
Nothing mocking about it, although you're of course free to interpret it any way you like. And believe me, I'd love to be in Omaha, but my job is to cover UGA football for the Ledger, not baseball. Pretty simple really.
I'll explain all that as soon as everything with me is finalized, crane. i thought everything was finalized when i posted that thing about auburn that i deleted, but it was premature for more than one reason. i really have no idea what's going to happen, but should know very shortly.
1. We hope you do not leave but if you do we wish you the best.
2. We may not win the national championship but the Gators are sure as hell not going to do so. They lost to Michigan and showed everyone how to beat them. It's going to be a bad year in Gainesville.
Maybe we showed Michigan how to beat them?
I can agree with that.
Did Florida find a defense that can stop the run, a back up QB, and a RB during the off season?
Based on the Spring game I saw they looked very much like the 2007 Gators.
I just bought Lindy's - only because it had the least obnoxious picture of a Florida player on it and had Knowshon on the cover too. They seem to be pretty high on Georgia.
David it must be rough not knowing what they have planned for you or where you might be moving to next. I think the "you Georgia people" line is what surprised a lot of people.
David, I've heard that the AJC is short one UGA beat writer at the moment...
You would be great for it. Go Dawgs and go for it.
I do not understand down-voting Georgia because of our schedule. If 9th is our final rank because of 2 or 3 losses - fine. But I'd be curious to know 8 teams favored against us in week one at a neutral site.
When pollsters factor in projected losses in the preseason ranking it just vaults the Big East favorites and other cupcake schedule teams.

To the poster who called Auburn a trailer trash cow tippin ag school.
You do realize that thUGA is a land-grant university as well, right?
You are probably just like every other UGA fan that I know.... You never attended a single class at UGA. Just another sidewalk alum.
Well, there tend to be a lot more "sidewalk alum" when you are UGA and represent the whole state of Georgia instead of a little niche of Alabama.
Gee David, Don't make us beg to
have you come back. Out side of our homes, we don't like to beg.
